Some artists make work that belongs on gallery walls. Frida Lövström makes work that belongs there and on the case in your hand. Her collection at Finnaij is unlike anything else in our roster — a collision of centuries-old painting tradition and the visual language of the digital present, rendered in paint so thick you can almost feel the ridges through the screen.
A Swedish Artist with a Distinctive Vision
Frida grew up in Umeå, in northern Sweden, where winters last six months and the light, when it finally returns each spring, arrives with an intensity that shapes you. Her childhood was marked by that extremity — months of pewter sky and snow-muted silence, then the sudden, almost violent return of colour. It is not a coincidence that her work is obsessed with colour, or that she deploys it with a confidence that makes restraint seem timid by comparison.
She studied fine art at Konstfack, Stockholm’s prestigious university of arts and design, where she felt the tension between the school’s deep Scandinavian design heritage — clean lines, honest materials, taking things away — and her own compulsion to put things back. Her response was impasto: thick, sculptural, unapologetic paint.
The Design Style
Frida works with a palette knife and oversized hog-hair brushes, building her surfaces layer by layer until the canvas becomes almost geological. Her subjects come from the European still life tradition — roses, peonies, tulips, citrus fruit, magnolia, Nordic wildflowers — rendered with hyperrealistic precision. Then she places them against something else entirely: bold horizontal bands of saturated colour bleeding across distressed white ground, raw pigment drips left ungoverned, digital-looking glitch patterns that seem to interrupt the painted surface like a corrupted file.
The result is two visual systems in collision: old world and new world, handmade and algorithmic, the permanent and the ephemeral. It shouldn’t hold together. It absolutely does.
In Her Own Words
“I paint things that hold still so I can look at what will not. A rose on my canvas takes forty hours to build up to the surface — each petal a day’s worth of knife work — and then I put it next to something that looks like a broken signal, because that is what beauty feels like now: fragile, interrupted, insistently alive despite everything. I grew up chasing the light back every spring. These paintings are still doing that.”

Why It Works on a Phone Case
Frida’s compositions are full bleed, edge-to-edge, portrait format — as if she designed them for this. The saturated palettes and bold botanical forms translate directly into something you notice from across a room. There is nothing subtle about carrying a Lövström, and that is entirely the point.
