VIRTA

VIRTA (Aino Virta) is a Finnish artist known for turning the Arctic darkness of her upbringing into richly textured, monochromatic paintings. She grew up in Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, where kaamos - the polar night - swallows the sun for weeks at a time. For VIRTA, darkness was never empty; it was full, and learning to see everything hidden inside it has shaped the way she has painted ever since.

She studied at Aalto University in Helsinki, where she discovered impasto technique and began working exclusively on black gesso grounds — refusing the white canvas as a starting point entirely. Her paintings are monochromatic without being minimalist: built up in heavy acrylic impasto with palette knives and wide fan brushes, every surface a study in finish contrast alone, where matte charcoal, high gloss, and faint iridescent sheen stand in for colour, echoing the grain of kelo pine, the fracture of lake ice, and the sweep of the aurora across the Finnish landscape she grew up inside.
